Introduction to Digital SLR Photography

These 2-hour hands-on workshops should appeal to those new to using a DSLR camera who want to learn how to move away from the automatic settings, take advantage of the functions and features of your camera and gain more control, divided into three distinct topic areas. Participants should bring their cameras and a standard 50mm lens (or similar) with them.

Workshop 1

In this session we will look at the fundamentals of a DSLR camera: megapixels, resolution and file formats and the camera modes. We will explore White Balance and ISO settings and how they affect the image captured by the camera, what setting to use, when to change and what to change it to.

Workshop 2

This next session will cover exposure and depth of field, which includes aperture, shutter speed and ISO. We look at what they mean, what they do and how the settings affect how your camera sees the image. You will learn how to meter, how to capture more creative images and how to choose the right settings.

Workshop 3

In the last session in this series, we will look at controlling focus and focal points and how they can aid composition. We will also look at metering, the various modes available, what they do and discuss the effects of the various settings. We will also learn to understand the histogram and what it tells us.

Basic camera operational skills will be required. Participants with new DSLR cameras are advised to read the user guide and become familiar with it’s basic operation first.
