Dandelion Clock

It has been a while since I posted an image to this photoblog - this dandelion is being used to publicise my exhibition The Nature of Plants at the Portico Gallery and Library in Manchester which opened today so it seems appropriate to include it. Thistle Abstract

Often neglected and discarded, I find thistles to be interesting subjects due to the serrated edges of their leaves, prickly spines, thorny hooks and often soft, flowers.

Poppies are one of my favourite flowers. This one grows just outside my back door and always brightens up the day.

Foeniculum vulgare - Fennel foliage is so delightfully fragile and aromatic, edible with a strong flavour similar to anise.

An abstract of the seedhead of an artichoke thistle, or wild artichoke - Cynara cardunculus. A common source of coagulant used in cheese-making as an alternative to Rennet.

Flowers are just so much more interesting when they are not in bloom - don't you think? Leonurus cardiaca - leonurus means lion coloured, the plant is also known as Motherwort due to its ability to relieve some feminine problems.

Teasel Spines

I really like Teasels, especially when they are reflecting the light - they seem to look so dramatic, graphic and not at all like the weeds many people dismiss them for. Finches like them too, when they go to seed. I have a number of teasels and thistles in my wildlife garden - they make great photographic subjects all through the year.

Smews are such striking birds, especially the males, so I was attracted to this one with the reflections of autumn colours in the water.
