   iCal has proved somewhat problematic over the past few weeks. It has become very slow and crashes frequently. It seems there are some issues which hopefully the next update will fix.

   iCal is still proving to be a nuisance. Certain events cause a crash and cannot be deleted. I have tried deleting preferences but still it is an issue. Even Mail appears to take longer sending the Notes back and forth. This is not like OSX at all, which is normally very stable, so I think I may have a corrupted data file and may need to delete the calendars and restore from backup.

   Another issue I have found is that my Canon IPF5000 printer does not seem to like Leopard at all! If I reboot into the Tiger install, it works fine but will not play with Leopard and Canon do not seem to have compatible drivers available yet - come on Canon! This is a nuisance having to dual boot every time I want to make a print!

   My iCal problem has been resolved - it seems the database got corrupted at some point. I deleted the preferences, deleted the calendar files and restored from a good backup prior to upgrading but before doing so, I saved out all of the entries I had made since. Once it had restored, I then imported all the new entries, backed it up and then re-synced with dot Mac replacing the data on dot Mac with that from my clean copy of iCal. Seems to have done the trick - I can now sync OK with my Palm Treo and the corrupted entries no longer exist. It is much quicker to load and use. I am happy again.

   As I am still booting into Tiger for printing and working on images, I started syncing iCal onto the Tiger install as well and can report that everything seems to work together nicely. The only exception is that whilst any events created in Tiger sync across to Leopard OK, any new events created in Leopard or any notes attached to existing events, don’t sync back to Tiger. Not surprising really since the data structures are clearly different but just mentioning it for completeness. I also found that Leopard and the Palm Treo still don’t really get on too well so I sync from Tiger each time - maybe this is a cunning plan to get me to upgrade to an iPhone.

   No progress from Palm on the syncing issues with Leopard unfortunately and it looks unlikely there will be any. I am using Missing Sync but even this does not add any new event created in Leopard to the Treo. I no longer need to reboot into Tiger as the printing issues have now been resolved (thanks Canon) and I can do everything else I need in Leopard which is a far more productive environment - for me, anyway. I update iCal in Leopard so rebooting to sync the Palm in Tiger is just no longer an option. My phone contract is up this month so it looks like the Treo will have to go - wonder what this ‘new iPhone’ will offer….

   An update just to say that I managed to get a 16gb iPhone from the Apple Store in Manchester, on July 11th - the day they were released. I sold the Treo immediately and have been using the iphone daily ever since and would not be without it. It has been superb. The cloud syncing through MobileMe was a little problematic initially but it settled down - still not perfect however but it mostly works. I find adding events to iCal don’t sync to the phone but adding them through MobileMe pushes them to the phone and both desktop and laptop! Good enough for me. Just wish the To Do list in iCal could be on the phone. Still, patience is a virtue my Dad used to tell me.
